My Students

"Science is Everything, Everything is Science!" That is my motto because I teach all subjects through Science. My students embrace this as their mantra as well as they conduct experiments and investigations throughout the school year.

I teach 25 curious, natural born third grade scientists in a small Title 1 school with an amazing and supportive principal.

My students are eager to learn and their brains are sponges that absorb any and all information given to them. Everything is a potential investigation/experiment to them so I strive to provide my students with as many inquiry and project based opportunities as possible. I constantly enhance the school curriculum and students' intrinsic motivation to learn more by infusing STEM correlations whenever possible. Because of our size, funding levels are not as high as other schools in our area so grants become an integral part of how I obtain materials to supplement learning experiences. Our school has made a commitment to infuse STEM related activities and projects into our classrooms but can only provide what budget numbers allow.

My Project

Beginning on the first day of school my students will be introduced to Science and the processes of Science by learning and reading about scientists, what they do, and the tools they use to conduct experiments. Students will draw what a scientist looks like, analyze their drawings and other pictures and be led to conclude that EVERYONE, is a scientist. They will then be given some of the tools that scientists use to conduct experiments, and be led through a number of hands on activities that will teach them to use the science tools. For example, they will collect rocks and observe them with a hand lens, record their findings in their science journals, measure them with rulers, conduct experiments about questions they may have about rocks, and make personal and classroom rock collections. All these activities will teach students how to think like a scientist and to use the tools that scientists use. Each student will have a Science Inquiry Backpack with their own set of science tools.

In order to think and act like a scientist, we need science tools.

This project will provide EVERY student in my class their own set of basic science equipment that they will use all year! They will not have to wait for materials to be available, they can take their science kits home and share what they are learning with their families and they will BE scientists! It would be great to have these materials when school begins. Help us explore the world!
