Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
This year I am privileged to learn and grow with a class of 20 students from all over the world. Their joy of learning and love of school has made this year so wonderful. I get to watch 20 passionate high energy first grade students stroll through my classroom door with huge smiles on their faces each morning with a true desire to learn.
Our school is very diverse and full of students who have a true desire to learn.
The majority of our students live in homes that English is not their main language spoken. The only chance to learn English is within our school walls. We incorporate lots of hands-on activities as well as lots of opportunities for students to speak in their first and second language. All of our students are extremely eager to strengthen their academic and English language skills. This year I also have a few special needs students who need some more resources to help them be successful during independent learning times throughout the day. Noise during center time is troublesome so having this traffic light will help students be mindful of their volume and help keep them focused.
My Project
My class is full of eager, energetic and social students. They often times have no clue how loud their voices and bodies are. When 20 students are working together and talking, the classroom volume gets very loud and it makes it hard for some students to concentrate and learn in this environment.
This Yacker Tracker will allow us to see how loud we are and teach us how to lower our volume and bodies during small group and individual times.
We will be able to learn what an acceptable volume is like and this tracker will alert us when we have gone above that. Students will also know when their bodies and how they handle objects affects the volume in the classroom.
I have used a Yacker Tracker for many years and ours just stopped working last month. We are truly lost without it at the moment. My students relied very heavily on using this tool and they would monitor themselves throughout the day. Without it we are lost.
