My Students

Do you remember how challenging writing was when you were growing up? Students in my classroom struggle with writing every day and I aim to help them persevere by inspiring them to write with real children's book authors.

I am a 3rd grade teacher in a high poverty school in the Northwest.

Over 80% of our students are from low-income households. There is also a wide range of diversity in our classroom, with 9 different native languages being spoken by all of the students. Despite the challenges of their home lives, all of the students are kind, hard-working, and they have a tremendous desire to learn.

My Project

I am requesting 32 different fiction and non-fiction literature books to use as mentor texts for writing lessons. These books cover a wide range of writing styles and genres. By reading aloud these books and studying the author's writing, my students will be able to learn the craft of writing such as, using descriptive language and sentence variety. They can also learn the importance of writing for an audience and that organization and conventions matter to our readers. These mentor texts would allow them to not only hear authentic literature, but write great narratives, letters, and expository pieces modeled after great writers.

By making a donation to this project, you will help my 3rd graders to overcome their writing challenges and frustrations.

These books will help inspire them to take risks and become authors themselves. Please help fill our classroom with these amazing books to make writing exciting and meaningful for my students.
