My Students

Some of my students never are on a computer beyond the half hour at school. So when it comes time to write essays or answer questions they panic and do not know what to do. They get anxious and frustrated because they do not know how to capitalize letters, add punctuation or go to another paragraph.

My school is a failing Title I school.

My students come from all around the world; the one thing they have in common is the desire to learn. When they come to school, I want them to feel safe and forget everything they that is going on at home. Many of them come with hungry stomachs or dirty clothes. In my classroom, I want the passion for learning to engulf them.

My Project

Can you imagine going to work and not knowing how to use it or type on the keyboard? This is the position most of my students are in. They do not have computers at home but then at school we are asking them to know how to type essays. But with the lack of computer time available to them this is a task that is impossible to achieve. This is why I am asking for an iPad mini and keyboards for my classroom. I want to provide them with as much time as they can on the iPads and keyboards as they can. By having them readily available they can use them for writing in all of the core areas that they work on each day. This will allow them to be on the same playing field and feel confident when they are asked to type.

By having the opportunity to type on a regular basis my students anxiety and fear of typing in other situations will be gone.

Having access to keyboards and practicing writing and spelling they will be growing in all areas. As a teacher it is my responsibility to provide them with the tools that are necessary to succeed and I think this is a step in the right direction.
