This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students make up the third grade ICT class in a high poverty school in Washington Heights. Despite the fact that almost 90% of the students in my school are from low income families, my class is made up of an amazing group of children who love to learn. These children love school. They are inquisitive, creative, and very enthusiastic. They absolutely love reading, and many of them are approaching grade level and some are even reading above grade level. I can't wait to watch them grow even more this year!

My Project

Building a foundation in literacy is so crucial in the early grades. Thankfully, my students have come to me with a love for reading. They just eat up any books that are put in front of them. As a teacher, I can use this to help strengthen my students' skills, not only in reading, but it writing. I plan to use these texts as examples of great writing for my students. We will study the author's craft in each of the texts during our Reader's and Writer's Workshop. The students will then imitate the styles of the authors we study in their own writing. This will truly help my students become better writers.
