My students are always writing, drawing, constructing, creating, inventing... all powered by their pencils.
My students want to learn.
However, in their lower socioeconomic neighborhood, the last thing any of them, or their parents, are thinking about are quality and I do stress quality materials for school. Some students can afford it, while others cannot. And when they are asked to buy their own materials, this fact glares at them in their face.
My Project
With these reliable pencils, students will be able to do all of their mathematical tasks with the confidence that their pencil point will not break. This will not only save them time from running to a pencil sharpener, but help them not break their concentration or disturb others with the noise of the pencil sharpener.
If the number of minutes students' spent sharpening their unreliable pencils from the unreliable classroom sharpener in their geometry class, it would probably sum to the equivalence of a full work week.
This time does not even include the interruption in their learning and other students' learning while they are up and about. Every second of class time is precious, and these pencils will give students the one thing that money simply cannot buy... time!
