Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Have you ever sat down to write a story or essay, only to find yourself staring at a blank page? My students face this daunting prospect on a daily basis. Writing is one of the hardest skills to master as a student, yet each of the 30 kids in my class willingly take on this challenge.

My classroom is a buzz of activity, focused on giving kids the opportunities that they may not get elsewhere.

My 5th grade class is in a high-need, low income public school, nestled in the heart of Southern California. Each of the students in my class is a vibrant, excited learner who looks for the next opportunity to gain knowledge.

My Project

In order for my students to be successful writers, they must have the basic tools available to them. Many published authors have a journal or notebook where they keep their writing ideas. My wish is for my students to have this as well. The notebooks will be tabbed into several sections, each with ideas, lessons, helping charts, and other things we discuss and learn in class that will help the students to become better writers. The folders will be there so that the students can keep their drafts neat and orderly. They will also make sure that the papers are easily accessible and not lost, as we all know what it feels like when something you worked hard on becomes lost or gets destroyed. With these materials, they will gain a respect for the craft of writing, as well as learn the basic skills for the craft.

Throughout their lives, my students will be asked to write.

Whether it be for a college essay, on a job application, or for a speech they will be delivering to a group of colleagues in the future, they will need to have the skills necessary to put an exciting, readable, and intelligent writing piece together. By setting up notebooks and organizational materials at this early age, and then including fabulous writing lessons, I will be teaching the students the foundation for good writing.
