My Students
My students are creative, hilarious and endearingly hopeful children who, as English as a Second Language learners, do not hear the English language beyond our school. Their parents do not have the language skills to ask them questions about their learning or reinforce lessons learned in school. This upcoming year, I am teaching Special Education in addition to my English as a Second Language population. In order to truly differentiate my teaching and address all the needs of my students, I want to reach the wide range of interests. My students are eager and curious children who enjoy learning. I teach at a Title One school, meaning that nearly all of my students live below the nation-wide poverty line. Beyond the classroom, my students rarely interact with English texts. These new resources would excite the students' naturally inquisitive minds and motivate them to explore topics beyond my explicit teachings.
My Project
I am requesting basic classroom essentials such as pens, pencils, sharpies and index cards to help my special needs classroom become published authors this upcoming school year. Since most of the students are learning English as a second language, it is crucial for them to go through each stage of the writing process to help them draft, revise, edit and finally publish their writing. Each stage will require students use a specific colored pen so they can see the progress as they work. The pencils will be used to start their draft and the sharpies to trace their published piece. The index cards will be cut up to their liking and glued anywhere on their writing for pictures (perfect for all about me / non-fiction writing). My students are from low income families who have a hard time purchasing important classroom supplies. I would like to create an environment in the beginning of the school year where the students can have the needed writing tools to be productive and published authors.
Color coded, writing tools can help students go through each stage of the writing process successfully!
These classroom basics will provide a huge boost for my students to start off the year.
