This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are absolutely amazing in every way. Our class is complete with 25 enthusiastic, curious, and animated first graders from a range of cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds. Our class is an integrated co-teaching (ICT) classroom meaning that a portion of our students have special needs. Our needs range from speech and language disorders to autism but none of the labels stop any of the students from trying their hardest and always exceeding expectations. These 25 students are dedicated and excelling in the classroom is the norm!
Our class of students are a unique, clever, determined, and persistent bunch with a range of interests and needs - making each and every lesson new and exciting!
My co-teacher and I take a very hands-on approach to education which allows students to demonstrate their learning in a variety of ways.
My Project
My students have started using flair pens in writing and it has made a huge difference in the way that they draw and write. Using flair pens means that they are not able to erase--might seem stressful, but it is actually extremely important! With no erasing you are able to see a student's train of thought, how they edit their work and find patterns in their spelling and work. It is a useful tool for both teachers and students. Pens are also a lot easier for first graders with less hand strength to use because they do not need as much pressure in order to write, meaning that students' hands don't tire! It's a win-win situation all around!
These pens will be used not only during writing but also during journal time, choice time, math, science...all day long!
As part of the learn 'how to use flair pens' process, we have used our pens up quickly and have run out. Getting a large supply will ensure that my students can use pens all year round. Getting two different colors will allow students to differentiate between the changes they make during the revising and editing process of their writing. We can't wait to see how these pens positively impact our writing, creativity and self-confidence!
