My students need these books to help inspire their writing. In this day and age of computers, social media and texting, our students have lost the zeal for writing with detail and emotion.

My Students
I am the luckiest educator there is! I get to be called teacher by the most amazing group of students. Despite any struggles they face- and some face hardships that most adults can't imagine- my students come to school every day with a determination and a hopefulness that cannot be contained.
I learn as much from my students as they do from me.
I have learned words in Spanish, French, Farsi, and Lao to name a few. I have seen children go from nonreaders to voracious readers and nonspeakers to loquacious speakers.
We celebrate each accomplishment along the way no matter how small because to my students every milestone counts. My school lacks a lot of resources- technology and air conditioning to name a few, but what we lack in facilities, my students make up for in heart and tenacity and I can't imagine teaching anywhere else.
My Project
The books in this project will make a difference in my students' learning by providing authentic examples of rich language, clever comparisons, and motivational models.
Students who are used to abbreviated messages in texts and limited character counts on Twitter need beautiful, thoughtful models to reclaim the joy of writing.
These books will provide that for my students. One of the books, "You Have to Write" shows children how all writers make mistakes and do multiple versions of a piece before publishing it. Another book, "Out of the Ocean" uses a quiet walk on the beach to show students how to take a small moment and make it appeal to a reader through vivid language and descriptions. Finally, the book, "Ice Bear: In the Steps of the Polar Bear" uses an Inuit narrator and oil and pencil illustrations to capture the polar bear's life and show students how to find their voices as writers.
