Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
One of the first units that Art 1 and Drawing students study is line. Learning about the different types of lines and line variation prepares students to be able to observe and draw objects that they see. Being able to control the angles and curves of their pencils is essential to create realistic drawings.
While cursive is not often taught in school anymore, it is actually a perfect way for beginning art students to learn the power of expressive lines!
Gaining confidence in the lost art of cursive handwriting can help my students learn to slow down and focus on intentional mark making. By practicing these valuable handwriting skills as warmups, students can build confidence and transfer what they learn to their artwork.
The Cursive Handbook for Teens incorporates positive quotes that will reinforce a growth mindset as students practice. A class set of whiteboards and markers will allow students to write and easily erase for a low stress experience. When transitioning to paper, quick-drying Uni-Ball Jetstream pens will ensure that left handed students are equally supported. As students gain confidence, sets of Pilot Varsity and Eyeye disposable fountain pens will allow them to choose the option that feels most comfortable. By the Spring, I hope that students will be excited to practice their penmanship on beautiful handwritten notes to their family and friends. I plan to conclude with a lesson in which students write an original poem in cursive to accompany one of their artworks!
Surely, there will be a learning curve as we revive the lost art of cursive. However, with a patient teacher, scaffolded practice, and the right tools, I know my students will get off on the "write" foot!
