My Project
Our school is a small, community Title I school of 425 students located in Las Vegas that serves Pre-K through 5th grade students. Unfortunately, we receive limited funding, although we have several programs serving high needs students.
At our school, 5th grade is departmentalized, and I am responsible for teaching math to all classes.
We, like so many others in our capacity, are still dealing with students who are still behind academically. These students want to do well but certainly have a ladder to climb to be ready for middle school next year.
Manipulatives are an important part of number development. Unfortunately, one issue in particular that has developed is the inability to share school supplies between students. As a result, we do not have enough supplies to go around. The hope of my project is to acquire additional supplies so all students can have their own materials.
The use of dry erase whiteboards in the classroom is a fun way to learn math. Students enjoy using whiteboards. As a result, they are more inclined to participate in class and share their work. In addition, as the teacher, it is much easier for me to move through the classroom and check students' work since they are writing much larger on a whiteboard with bright colors. This allows me to review more students' work in the given class time as opposed to when they use paper and pencils.
A couple years ago, I was able to secure the whiteboards through DonorsChoose. Now, our supply of supporting materials, markers, and erasers has diminished. This request will refill these items.
