My Students

The students who attend my school come from a variety of ethnic and academic backgrounds. The students desire success but have not had the opportunity to reach their full potential for reasons outside of their control. Many of our kiddos will be the first to graduate high school in their family, others will be the first to attend college or post secondary training. I have taken on 9th graders as a personal passion to set the stage for their high school experience. Research shows that success in 9th grade leads to future school success and increased graduation rates. I am committed to ensuring they have a positive experience with their high school on-boarding and set up for bright academic futures.

There are several students who are experiencing homelessness.

According to Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs, students need their basic needs met in order to succeed academically. If students are worried about where they will sleep or get their next meal, they definitely won't be able to achieve their highest potential. Students needs should be met in school in order to stay organized, meet deadlines, and achieve at high levels.

My Project

Writing is thinking. My students need composition notebooks and other language supportive instructional materials to support their growth in reading, writing, and thinking. The composition notebooks will be organized into 4 categories: a learning log, an interactive journal, classroom writing, and a new word dictionary.

In addition to student academic growth and development, the notebooks help me get to know my students because it gives them a platform to tell me anything.

The journals will be used for an entire year and will be a great representation of their work as freshmen scholars. They will have a learning log where they will make personal connections with the texts we are reading. The interactive journal portion of their notebook will be an avenue for students to write me letters and communicate with me.

My students will be able to fill the rest of the pages of this composition notebook with a new word dictionary and essay rough drafts. The students will be asked to write several essays over the course of 9th grade. This composition notebook will be an effective space for students to write their rough drafts. They will write about what they think, how they make connections to what they read, and how to connect their ideas to the world today. The students will grow as writers and build confidence in their ability to communicate in writing.

The colored paper and large poster boards will assist the students in their classroom instruction to build vocabulary and collaboration within their groups. They will have room to make posters to demonstrate learning with their groups and the classroom. The students will use all of the materials to continue developing their 21st century skills.
