My Project
I'm a 5th-grade teacher in a low-income/high-poverty school district. My students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. One of those challenges is that they don't have adequate supplies due to the economic hardships they face. Our students come from a variety of different economic backgrounds, with 100% of our students receiving free lunch.
How can we close the achievement gap when students do not have the necessary materials to succeed?
I believe that in order for my students to be successful, they need all the tools to do so. They are innovative and just need a little help along the way to be successful.
Our school provides us with two ink cartridges a year, but we find that in ELA class, it is never enough. I currently have my students type up essays and have to print each student's rough draft so that they can physically edit their papers. Having the necessary ink for our classroom is essential to the basic needs of our classroom. The ink for our classroom will supply our printer with enough ink to last the entire school year! Providing my students with ink will help them learn various writing process skills.
