This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I am proud to teach at an inner-city school in Houston, Texas. Unfortunately, my school was affected by Hurricane Harvey. Our school was flooded severely and needed to be rebuilt. We are utilizing temporary buildings located on the campus of a middle school until our new facility is completed in 2020.
My school is almost totally English language learners who struggle to learn to read, write, and speak the English language.
Most of my students are from low-income families that are willing to do whatever they can to help with their children's education, but that is not always enough.
The children are hardworking and thirst for knowledge. Their willingness to succeed will not be stifled by the continued effects of Hurricane Harvey. Learning must continue.
My Project
It's been a year and a half since Hurricane Harvey destroyed our school, and we have yet to fully recover. My school is forced to share a campus with another school. We are housed in temporary buildings which serve as Braeburn Elementary. Funding is very limited for us until our new school is completed in 2020.
I refuse to let our unfortunate circumstances lessen my desire to give my students the best possible writing experience.
With the new up to date materials, I will be able to utilize the latest and most interesting methods to teach expository writing. Today's students are more visual than ever, and the posters will provide the visual learners with an appealing source of information.
Students will be able to experience tactile stimulation using the Post It notes to share their ideas with me and their classmates. I will also be able to give immediate feed back quickly using the sticky notes.
