The students here have the greatest aspirations. They enjoy exercising and stretching their growing brains. It is not uncommon to find students caught in a dream or studying to find the answer to those itching questions.
My students come from a plethora of cultures and their learning styles are just as varied.
The area surrounding our school is lower-income, and many of the students have free or reduced-price lunch. In my classroom alone, there are five languages spoken.
My students don't view these aspects of their lives as barriers but rather stepping stones to take them to the next step. They are so proud of themselves and the accomplishments that they make when they try their hardest.
My Project
This year, we have learned the importance of writing and the role that it plays in a child's reading. The tools that are part of this project are designed to help students in my first grade class improve their handwriting and spelling, ultimately helping them to become better writers. They can use the different writing boards to practice spelling patterns. The texture and resistance that come from using the whiteboard crayons and chalk on the different boards solidify what they are writing in their brains.
With COVID-19, more and more students are using technology at a home as well as in a school setting, I want to give them some texture and experience practicing their handwriting and spelling.
As my students use these different tools, they will be able to strengthen both their mind and body as they work on their small motor skills. When a student doesn't have to worry about handwriting, they can focus more on their spelling and writing conventions. The different letter tools (stamps, punches, etc.) that I requested give them opportunities to spell and manipulate letters outside of simply writing them.
My students will be able to use these resources with easy access using the storage container that I requested, to practice in groups and independently the spelling patterns that we are working on in class as well as begin their own writing projects.
