Writing as Freedom: Interactive Journals for Students

My students need materials to create their interactive notebooks including Mead Composition Notebooks, folders, Elmer's glue sticks, Sharpie highlighters, BIC and Paper Mate pens, colored paper, Expo dry erase markers and Crayola markers.

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

English is a critical skill my students need to survive. My students are 10th graders from Watts in South Central LA. At our school students are entering the classroom at 4th, 3rd, and 2nd-grade levels, and they are working to catch up. Our goal is to progress reading and writing by 1.5-2 grade levels in a year.

In order to have access to all opportunities, my students need to learn to be analytical readers, creative writers, engaging speakers, and compassionate listeners.

We use interactive notebooks to stay organized. These allow students to keep all their materials in the same place, in one easy to search location. Students can better visualize a subject that can be difficult for them to understand.

My Project

Writing is a critical skill that many students are missing. In order to have options for college and careers, students must be strong writers. Interactive journals allow students the opportunity to stay organized and practice their writing skills in many different ways. To create these journals we need a variety of supplies including Mead Composition Notebooks, folders, Elmer's glue sticks, BIC and Paper Mate pens, colored paper, Sharpie highlighters, and Crayola markers.

Students will journal each class period, practicing their writing in a variety of different styles.

They will use their notebooks to write, record notes, and respond to our readings. Notebooks are critical to organization and students visualizing English in a way that makes sense to them.

Each student gets to grow their ability to write in order to reach their goals.
