Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are 22 second graders, all bright and eager to learn! All of them are English language learners. Their big goal is to be able to read at or above grade level by the end of the year. Let's close the achievement gap by ensuring that all students reach literacy proficiency!

Have you ever struggled writing fluently as a student?

Think about how writing more confidently and expressively boosts your motivation to read and write! My students are 22 second graders in California. They are all English language learners. 95% of the students in the school qualify for free and reduced lunches. They are bright, eager, and enthusiastic to learn. They love to read, and have a natural curiosity to all that is around them. They attend a high achieving charter school. We are currently in our 3rd year, and we have a base API score of 849! The students work so very hard and are extremely dedicated. We have very high expectations for them. Every day, we have writer's workshop with our students. The students have big goals in reading, writing, and math. The students themselves track their own goals. With more resources and more support, these students can reach their goals and beyond.

My Project

The resources I'm requesting are writing centers and activities that will inspire, enrich, and motivate these students to become 2nd grade literacy masters. These centers are fun ways to ensure student learning and retention. They will boost their confidence and motivation to write! It also ensures that they are learning in ways that are engaging. The students work diligently every day making sure that they understand the concept being learned and that they are able to apply their skills onto higher level thinking activities. These resources will not only engage these students but will be a valuable tool that will make them more prepared for college and beyond. It will also be a long lasting resource for future 2nd graders to come.

We must work hard to empower the children in our communities by ensuring that all students attain an excellent education, especially historically disadvantaged minorities.

It is our mission and our duty to open opportunities to those students who lack resources and to make sure that they have the same opportunities as their wealthier peers. College is a reality for these students too; together we can close this gap and change life trajectories for the better!
