This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach at a large urban high school. I am about to begin my 19th year teaching and I have spent my entire career in this one community.
My students are from south Los Angeles county, the majority of them are Latinos, many are second language learners, and they attend a high school with more than 3000 students.
They are part of the Health, Science, and Medicine Academy at our high school. I have the opportunity to loop with these students growing with them from 10th through 12th grade.
My Project
My students will not use these materials directly, but rather, will have a stronger teacher of writing based on these reference and writing guides. I will use these reference books to increase the rigor of my writing program for all my students- beginning with Honors English 10 and continuing through Advanced Placement English Language & Composition in 11th, and finally, AP Capstone Research during their senior year. These writing and reference guides will provide me with a repertoire of teaching points that will help me differentiate and target the needs of my students, ensuring them the writing skills necessary to be both College and Career Ready.
This project will have a HUGE impact on the way writing is taught in my classroom.
Whole group instruction is an integral part of writing instruction, what I am longing to do is move my students into more independent writers by spending more 1-to-1 time with them for personalized instruction allowing for each of them to become stronger writers in the process. While the reference materials are key, I also require different colored ink pens to clearly differentiate exactly what step in the process I am addressing. A clear and consistent color-coding system facilitates this in an easy to understand system.
