I teach 9th grade English and Journalism in a high need urban area.
My students have a hard time getting the supplies they need within a timely manner. They also have a difficult time organizing their thoughts and often succumb to the peer pressure that it is not "cool" to carry around a lot of materials at one time.
The Writer's-Reader's notebook is a perfect solution because it is small, sturdy, and organized in the categories necessary to explore their thoughts when they read, develop new ideas when they write, record and remember new words that they come across, and enhance their grammar skills for successful communication.
Your help will make it possible to set up my classroom as a writers-readers workshop where students have choice about what they read and write and time to develop their ideas.
Empowering my students with the structure provided in the Writer's-Reader's notebook will help me to know my students so that I can meet their learning needs and help them to develop as critical thinkers.
