Writer's Notebooks for 8th Grade English Class Memoir Unit

My 8th grade English students have a lot to say but lack the materials needed to make their words come to life on paper. These bright, energetic students need composition books, pens and a classroom timer in order to begin their memoir unit that requires daily journaling.

Since the first day of school, I have urged my students to develop their writing skills in my classroom. Sadly, many students cannot afford the basic supplies needed to maintain a daily journal. Our upcoming memoir unit provides an excellent situation where my students can learn the elements of memoirs and work to develop their own personal narratives. Without composition books, students struggle to maintain a cohesive and ordered journal where they can explore their thoughts and feelings through pen and paper.

My students need composition books in order to maximize the memoir unit we are about to begin. In addition to journals, my students could benefit from having a classroom set of pens and a classroom timer to keep them accountable for their daily journaling. These three resources could greatly enhance our classroom environment and provide students an opportunity to express their voice while developing writing skills.

A student who cannot write simply because he or she lacks a pen and paper is unacceptable. With your help, my students will grow as writers and come to understand the importance of self-reflection by use of a journal. This project is one that students can look back on years from now and recall the transformational time they experienced in middle school. With your gift, my students can let their voices be heard not only today, but also many years from now.
