My Students

As silly as it may sound, first grade is tough! We are all 6 and 7 years old, learning to share (but not understanding why we have to), learning to socialize and make friends, and learning how to put all those letters and sounds together so we can write stories and read our favorite books.

We are eager to put the new technology skills we learned from being online for a year to work by publishing our writing.

I have 17 enthusiastic first graders! They are from diverse backgrounds and represent many different ethnic/cultural groups, speak multiple languages, and come from varied economic levels. They work hard, are inquisitive, and energetic.

My Project

The last school year was challenging for my first graders. We relied heavily on technology to accomplish tasks we would normally do by hand in the classroom. There is no denying the new computer skills we have because of it. Now that we are back in the classroom, there is also no denying the difficulty we have in expressing ourselves through written word.

The resources I am requesting in this project will allow us to practice writing narrative, informative, and opinion pieces.

This is how they will be utilized in my classroom:

Journals and pencils will help us practice writing all genres everyday. (W.1.1, W.1.2, W.1.3, L.1.1a)

A color printer and wireless mice will allow us to use our Chromebook to turn our final drafts into published books with colored illustrations that we can share with our peers. (W.1.6)

Flexible seating will allow us to write (L.1.1a) where we are comfortable because the writing process at this age is very hard and does not flow easily.

A new book case and book bins will store nonfiction texts so we can easily find resources and facts to write (RF.1.4a) about. Nonfiction themes like animals, community workers, biographies and science (RI.1.10) will be easily accessible.

Incentives and rewards for progressing in our writing goals like stickers and fidget toys, will encourage us during the year, such treats were inaccessible virtually.

A deck of creative writing topics (The Storymatic Kids) that will make it easier for us to start our writing and get our juices flowing! (W.1.3)
