The ability to convey ideas through writing is one of the most powerful skills my first graders will learn. My students are funny, creative, reflective, and empathetic. They have many wonderful stories to share and so many things they are interested in learning about. Not a day goes by that my students aren't sharing stories with me.
The majority of my students come from low-income households, yet the commitment the families of my students bring to school is incredible.
The community I teach in is truly rising up together to develop strong future leaders.
My first graders continue to blow me away with their resilience. They desire to share their stories and continually teach me to find wonder in the everyday things.
My school is located one of the most diverse communities in the city, and has historically contained the most underserved students. However, the students and families in my school community are the most dedicated group of people I have yet worked with.
The students I work with every day inspire me to teach every day, and truly are my greatest joy!
My Project
This year my students will use writing journals to practice specific skills taught in lessons, as well as to creatively create stories and share their thought. The Classic Primary Composition Books will give them necessary support for forming letters and sentences with appropriate spacing and size. First graders are still developing fine motor skills, and journals with larger spaces give them the support they need to grow as confident writers.
I'm also requesting Paper Mate felt tip pens.
There is something about giving first graders a pen to publish their writing that lights the fire for writing! They love their special "author's pen", and work so carefully to create beautiful stories with their pens.
These tools will help my students develop as thoughtful, inspired authors!
