My students need writing utensils, paper supplies like colored paper and card stock, various materials for presenting, and organizational tools and supplies.
Do you remember the commercial a few years ago where consumable products were automatically refilled for you? Unfortunately, that was a fantasy! In my classroom, we use many consumable items that are now running low and with budget cuts; the funds are not available to replenish them.
In college, I had a professor who told us, "You learn that which you do, not something else." My students LOVE to do projects and assignments that produce artifacts to show off their hard work.
They love to use a multitude of materials that allow them to infuse color and flair that reflect their personal touches on their work. Many of them come from homes considered to be impoverished and their access to resources is limited. I see their best work when they know they will be able to use colored pens and presentation boards, sharpie pens, and poster board to display their final work. Colored papers also assist my students in organizing their work, especially their writing. We use green paper to represent their topic and main idea sentences, yellow paper to represent their supporting ideas, and pink or red paper to represent their supporting details. All of these materials my students enjoy using come in limited supplies and once we go through our supply, the motivation to do runs out too
My Project
By completing this project, our classroom will be restocked and our consumable materials will be replenished. The paper supplies, including all of the colored papers, will allow my students to continue using green, yellow, and red color cues to organize their writing. They will also have choices of papers on which to publish their written work. The post-it notes allow my students to mark pages or sections of text as they read to help them summarize when they are finished reading and to be able to refer back to specific points in the text during follow-up discussions. Card stock, poster board, and presentation boards give my students a variety of mediums they can utilize to present their finished work. Colored pens and sharpie pens bring variety and choice into our classroom when students are creating presentations. The labels, folders, and pencil pouches all help maintain organization of materials for my students so they can keep track of their books and assignments.
Your donation to help us replenish our consumable materials will allow my students to continue to work with a variety of mediums they find motivating and engaging.
My students will be learning more because they are able to DO. I wholeheartedly believe my professor's philosophy that you learn that which you do and your support will help my students to do and to learn!
