Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students live in a low-income, high-poverty area. Many students are English Language Learners and need experience with language. They may not have many opportunities at home after school or on weekends to practice their English skills.

All of the students at the school qualify for free lunches.

Many come to school hungry and tired because their families are concerned with affording day-to-day necessities. The school is a safe haven for many students. They need to create good working habits in order to succeed in the future!

My Project

Many of the supplies we receive at school are the very minimum that we get for our students. I want my students to have a rich writing experience throughout the day.

Journals will give my students the credibility that they deserve!

By putting journals into the hands of my students, they often feel like the writing that they do matters. They are at the beginning stages of learning how to write. If I give them supplies that aren't what older students use, how can they feel as if they are writers within a community?

Journals are a great way to keep the thoughts they have about reading all in one place. They often look back to what they have written about a story or look to see how they have progressed in their writing. They also need journals for Science. Students can express what they have learned in Science through writing. I would like to give them that experience of using writing as a tool to great learning!
