My Students

Seniors in a neighborhood high school, my students were once passed over by all three tiers of selective city schools, yet they are no less--but perhaps even more--deserving. Now become ambitious young scholars, they're models of the transformational power of excellent education--but we need books!

Due to some hardship in the past—homelessness, family abuse, poor decision making, involvement in gangs, low achievement on exams, or in some cases even chance or, in one case, choice—my students are those who were not accepted into a prestigious magnet school, a selective citywide theme school, or a lottery-based charter school.

Yet, they are no less critical, creative, or intelligent thinkers. They are the students who depend on their neighborhood school to provide an excellent education. That's why we recently created an Advanced Placement program for them at our school. These students are the too-often overlooked individuals who yet manage to work hard, dream big, and create a high-achieving academic subculture within a school that otherwise graduates only 40% of its students. They are great kids facing extraordinary challenges while putting forth even more extraordinary effort in the belief that they can and will achieve the revolutionary results an excellent education promises.

My Project

My students, first generation college-goers shocked by the countless hurdles to college admission (SAT, ACT, FAFSA, Housing Forms, etc.) and exploring myriad careers available to high-achievers, are realizing how competitive and difficult it is to raise oneself up, to find the courage to succeed in the face of a culture of failure, confronted by so many personal and foreign obstacles. My requested books empower kids. They offer clear, straightforward, student-friendly guidance for all kinds of writing tasks across disciplines, including essays, personal statements, resumes, research, etc. Even more importantly, they remove mystery and fear from new writing tasks—especially important for my students, whose exposure to various forms is limited—by breaking all writing down into six fundamental traits, making kids conscious of these traits as they are simply adapted to fit different types of writing requirements. By building on six basic traits, students make sense of any writing task.

The traits empower students with their own resource for incremental guidance and personalized tips.

This is writing the way you wish you had learned it! Access to these books would offer a windfall reference and resource for us. Students will be able to see models and tips for raising their writing to levels competitive with their college-going peers around the country. We need these texts so that we have the resources to do what we do best--RISE TO THE OCCASION!
