Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are middle schoolers at a Title I school in the Washington Heights neighborhood of New York. 100% of the students are on the free lunch program. My students come from diverse backgrounds and many from tough homes.

My students are active and enthusiastic, even though they carry a lot of stress from home which sometimes interferes with their ability to focus on doing their best work.

My students are motivated and eager to do well. They want to learn and they constantly seeking opportunities to take ownership of their learning.

My Project

My students are excited about learning. They love to express themselves through writing, and as much as they love using the computers to type up their work, they love the sense of accomplishment that comes from holding the evidence of their hard work in their hands via a printed version. My students need a printer to print out their work to not only share with their peers, but to share with their parents at home.

Allowing my students the opportunity to bring their writing home to share with their parents provides my students with a sense of pride and an eagerness to push themselves with their work.

Upon finishing a writing piece, they eagerly ask if I can make copies of their essays because they want to show their families the work that they have done in class. I want to be able to connect their classwork to their home life. I want to be able to allow them the opportunity to take pride in their hard work.

Allowing us to have these resources will further enhance not only their desire to write, but also their desire to research and investigate more about the world around them.
