Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Good writers can express themselves clearly. Good writers can persuade and inform. Good writers can transport us to another time or another place. Good writers can put their thoughts and ideas down on paper in a clear, concise manner. Help my students become good writers!

I teach at a unique urban school.

My students come from a variety of backgrounds. I teach students Kindergarten through fifth grade, and many of them have individual needs that do not allow them to attend school daily. Many of the students I teach have emotional and social issues, have frequent medical treatments, have safety concerns, have difficulty in a traditional school setting and/or are homeless. My students each face their own challenges every day outside of school.

My Project

My students need to practice writing! They need to be able to critically analyze text in a written form. The journals will allow all of their writings to be in one place. My students will be able to look back and self-reflect on their writings. We will analyze our previous writings so that we may grow and become better writers. I will work with my students and teach them to write critically and analytically about the texts we are reading. They will also create their own writings, stories, essays, and poems in their journals. We will use our writers’ workshop knowledge and our writing journals to create writings. We will learn and practice how to effectively edit, revise, and publish our thoughts and ideas in our writing journals.

Supporting our classroom project will give my students a sense of ownership.

They will have their own journals to create their own body of written works. It will boost their confidence and self-esteem as they grow individually as writers. They will be able to see their growth, as writers, by being able to look back at their previous writings. It will encourage them to want to write. Help my students become good writers!
