Hello! I teach Kindergarten at an urban public school in Illinois. We have 34 Kindergartners in our classroom. Almost all of my students speak English as their second language and most are bilingual in English and Spanish. All of my students receive a free breakfast, that we eat in the classroom each morning, and most students qualify for free or reduced lunch.

My Kindergartners love learning how to read and write! However, with 34 Kindergartners in our classroom we use a lot of paper! Paper is expensive, in short supply and the students writing doesn't always need to be permanent. My Kindergartners LOVE when we sit on the rug and practice writing and play word games with small white boards. However, we don't have enough. Many of the whiteboards we do have are stained with permanent marker from previous classes.

If we had new small white boards for each student in our classroom the students would be able to practice writing over and over again on a clean surface! The students truly love to practice writing with the markers on the boards and then wipe it off to try again! We also often play games that are really spelling tests, but my Kindergartners are having fun and don't realize it! If each Kindergartner in our classroom had his or her own white board we could really get writing! The whiteboards are also a great visual and tactile form of writing for all of my students who are learning English as a second language.

My Kindergartners need white boards and dry erase markers to keep them actively engaged in learning to write! I have asked for white boards that have handwriting lines on one side and are blank on the other! With this type of whiteboard we can use the boards for writing and math activities too. You can help my Kindergartners by providing materials that will help them develop their reading and writing skills. Thank you for taking the time to read my proposal and considering helping my Kindergartners learn the joys of literacy!
