Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach in a self-contained second grade classroom. Our elementary school is one of many in our urban school district. It is located in low income area of the city where student mobility is high.

My students face many challenges everyday. Many take care of themselves after school. Others only speak Spanish in their homes. A few are even moving from school to school every few months. The students' priorities are not always on school work, especially writing. They can see the importance of reading and math and they love to do science experiments, but it is very hard to motivate them to participate in the writing process.

To encourage my students to write I would like to implement Writer's Workshop as part of our day. During the workshop mini lessons writing is promoted through quality literature. Students are highly motivated to begin their writing each day. The students love to have their own personal writing space. A special writing journal is the key of encouragement. At the end of each workshop students are able to use a special author's chair to share what they have written. During the sharing time all students celebrate each others' accomplished writing.

Writing works hand in hand with reading, but is often overlooked. Help me encourage a well-round student by providing my students with books that will promote writing, special writing journals and an author's chair cover for our sharing time. Writers make better readers!
