Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are happy, hardworking first graders who love school and really embody the joy of learning. They are immigrants or the children of immigrants and are mostly second language learners. The children attend a medium-sized, urban elementary school which cannot afford to provide all of the resources that we might want to share with them. Unfortunately, their parents are often unable to provide these extras either. As teachers, we believe that our kids deserve to have all the same experiences and opportunities as their more well-off counterparts. The kids are eager to learn, and it is our responsibility to help them succeed.

My Project

Writing is an important skill in school and in life. Writing improves reading and literacy skills, while giving students an outlet for imagination and creativity. I want to get my class excited about writing by creating a writing center filled with fun tools and supplies.

In the elementary grades, it seems we are always hunting for pencils.

Just when we are all ready to settle down to work on creating stories, someone needs their pencil sharpened, or can't find anything to write with. I want my kids to be able to explore their creativity and work on their writing without having to stop and look for supplies. Giving the kids fun tools such as colorful pencils, a pencil sharpener and felt tip pens will solve that problem while at the same time helping the kids to be excited for their writing lessons. The children will be able to choose a pencil and write their stories. They can use the felt tip pens to proofread and correct their writing, and then publish their stories. By the end of the school year, we will all be authors!
