Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Through creative expression one can create positive change in his/her life, as well as, in the lives of others. This is what we seek through this project.

My students are bright, inquisitive, creative, and often in need of one-on-one guidance and support.

They transfer to our school sometime after their second year of high school due to a variety of social and economic issues. We offer them the unique opportunity to earn their high school education through internships and project based learning assignments.

My Project

Our students will participate in storytelling and poetry writing workshops. In these workshops they will explore issues of identity and community connections. They will create a mask inspired by their poetry. That's why we need blank masks, glue, paint, and feathers. We have planned visits at a local senior center where students will share their stories and poetry in an inter-generational workshop.

Not only will these materials enhance their learning through a hands on creative project, it will also provide them with a tool to spark conversations with senior citizens.

Through these activities, students will learn the value of giving back to the community and doing for others.
