Write for the Fun of It

Help me give my students the basic materials they need to expand their writing. The yellow legal pad will allow students to format their essays in a way that is easily transferable to their final copy.

My Project

My students struggle every year to write five paragraph essays. I use the yellow legal pad as an organizer. Students fold the paper in four quadrants and use each quadrant to write a paragraph. We focus on one paragraph each week. Many students entering 6th grade are reading two to three grade levels below where they need to be, so I chunk my lesson to support them. We also use different colors for each section of our essays. For example I use the RACED strategy to help student so each letter is represented by a different color ink. I also use a lot of anchor charts and encourage students to do shared writing. Many students like to express themselves through drawing and poetry. I support my students creativity and help them by teaching different kinds of poems. For example, I Am From, Free Verse, and Do You Really Know Me? to name a few. My students will use the pens to write, to circle unfamiliar words during reading and to differentiate paragraphs of their Text Dependent Essay. My goal for the upcoming school year is to publish a book of poems that is written by students in my 3 classes. All the materials that I requested will be used by my students.
