My Students

I am a reading specialist at a rural school of around 300 students located in Southern Virginia. Our school is a Title I school that serves students in grades Pre-K - 5. Many of our students receive free and reduced breakfast and lunch and backpack meals on the weekends.

Despite the hardships that some of our students face, they are eager to learn and crave hands-on experiences.

Our students love to be read to and enjoy having access to books, they may otherwise not have at home. It is my goal to foster a love for reading as a means of broadening their knowledge base beyond the rural county in which we live.

My Project

Many students are very reluctant to write, but mentor texts give students a familiar model to follow.

Quality children's literature is a vital part of teaching reading, but is also a very effective vehicle to engage students in writing.

Here are some ways I would like to use the mentor books that I am requesting:

"Q is for Duck" - Alphabet books are not just for young children. They are actually ideal for upper elementary students! The first line in the book Q is for Duck reads, "A is for zoo because animals are at the zoo." I would utilize this book in the upper grade content areas as a cumulative assessment after completing a unit. Being that the book does not follow the traditional alphabet book pattern, the students would have to creatively apply the knowledge they learned. For example, after studying a unit on the American Revolution, the students could write, "C is for George Washington because he was the commander of the Continental Army".

"The Important Book" - This is a wonderful mentor text to teach character traits and build stronger students relationships. The book follows a predictable pattern that explains the most important trait of everyday items. I would then use that same pattern for all students to write about a classmate. This book would be our next One Book, One School project which was successfully implemented this year.

"These Hands" - This book portrays a grandfather telling his granddaughter past experiences and what his hands have done. Pictures would be taken of the hands of teachers and staff. Students would then write a book that explains how each staff member helps our school. This book could also inspire students to write about what their hands will do based on future goals.
