Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I work in a high poverty school. Most of my students did not attend preschool and receive free or reduced-price lunch. Many of these children are English learners, so while they are learning the essential basic skills for their educational foundation, they are also learning a new language!
My students generally come to me with little or no prior experience with using academic tools such as pencils or crayons.
They make incredible gains in this one short year of school. They are absolutely amazing kids!
My Project
Writing is one of the most challenging subjects for most young learners. There are so many factors involved: language, fine motor development, vocabulary, letter-sound correspondence, spacing, sight word knowledge, comprehension, etc. We take a scaffolded approach to the task, building upon it as we learn each skill. One of the most essential tasks we do is daily journal writing.
Daily journal writing ensures that my students are practicing and improving their writing skills each and every day.
We start with illustrations where we focus on drawing detailed pictures. Then we learn to label our pictures. We begin to add first sounds and eventually we write simple sentences. By the end of the year, most of my students can write multiple and varying sentences about their illustrations. It is an amazing thing to watch their writing develop from August to June! These sets of journals, as well as the sentence strips and markers, will give my students the daily writing practice they need.
