My Students

I serve students in the historic Bronzeville community on the south side of Chicago. Surrounded by rich cultural institutions which include the Bronzeville Children's Museum, the Southside Arts Center and the Dusable Museum, the community sits in proximity to art resources. My students are excited to explore art mediums, especially clay. At our school, art is a form of relaxation and a means to social and emotional healing from the trauma which also exists within the community.

My Project

My students love learning about animals. I noticed that when we drew reptiles, all eyes lit up. I'd like to channel this interest into a project that incorporates recycling, self-awareness and sculpture. The materials will be used to make an animal sculpture in the style of Judith Scott who was an American sculptor born deaf and with Downs syndrome. Despite her disability, she learned to communicate through art using fiber.

I want my students to use recycled materials to create animal fiber sculptures that match their personalities.

As they research animal traits, my students will reflect on the personal qualities that make them unique. They will learn to use new materials safely while gaining an appreciation for the work of artists with disabilities who have been historically underrepresented and marginalized. Through this process, I hope to build my students' self-awareness which will enable them to achieve success in school and in life.
