This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My two teammates and I teach 2nd grade. We teach at a public school that is located in a high-need community. We have a high population of English Language Learners at our school. We are also a Title I school currently in our 3rd year of Program Improvement status.
Our students love non-fiction books, social studies and science! The students read their social studies and science textbooks during every spare minute they have, oohing and aahing at the pictures.
We need 60 subscriptions of Weekly Reader to grab our students' interest while building the academic vocabulary they need to succeed in school. Weekly Reader engages our students in discussions about current events as well as science and social studies. Not only are they learning about academic subjects, they are gaining a further awareness about the world around them.
Your help will ensure that our students continue to love science and social studies. It will help our students build the vocabulary they need to gain a solid understanding of the information presented in their textbooks. Most importantly, you will help our students become critical thinkers about the world around them.
More than half of students from low‑income households
Data about students' economic need comes from the National Center for Education Statistics, via our partners at MDR Education. Learn more
