My students need literature available to read in order to increase their vocabulary and comprehension. A variety of books is a must for this to be achieved.
Remember reading that book that grabbed you attention and wouldn't let go? I have several students that struggle with reading and without a variety of books, they may never experience this feeling. We read a lot in our class and I want to give all of my students a great opportunity to get engaged!
Our school is a poverty school.
I teach 2nd grade. I have 4 students diagnosed with autism. We do not have a lot of funds to purchase extras like books. My students range in reading ability for 1st grade to 4th grade level. This requires lots of reading choices in order to reach every child.
My Project
The books will be put into groups by reading level. The students will be given a group to read according to their individual reading level. After they have read the book, they will take an Accelerated Reading test. They will be able to feel successful because they will have books that are not intimidating to them. This will also allow them to experience that feeling of not being able to put a book down because it so great!
Many of my students do not have books to read at home.
School is their only opportunity to engage in the wonderful adventures only books can take them. These books would greatly benefit all of my students and many more in the future.
