Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My classroom is filled with light and joy, because the room reflects the students' work. We are creating projects based on student interest and related to the "real world." This manifests as drawing maps of the student neighborhood with an assist from Google Earth and technology.

We are a Special Education High School in Harlem.

Many of the students are talented artists and musicians, but do not have an opportunity to showcase their abilities. As a teacher with a multiple disabled population, I use a student centered approach to teaching and vary content using a cross curriculum method. That is why having art supplies is so important to my classes. When you offer a teenager art supplies with a blank piece of paper, the results can be astounding. Visualizations of family members and neighborhoods are created through the process of mapping, drawing, or even writing poetry. The classes can then do illustrations to further personalize their work. Many of our students attend community based work study programs. These can include food pantries; retail stores; and day care centers. The students enjoy taking photographs of neighborhood places. With art supplies I will be able to create personal memory books with the students' comments about each area and page.

My Project

My students are able to verbalize information, but cannot always read what is written in content. I have requested art supplies such as acrylic paint, markers, paper, and rulers for our Art through Social Studies project. With the use of these art supplies, my students will be able to expand their responses with the use of drawings; sketches and even writing their personal information in a graffiti style. I want my classroom to be an area of creativity. When the students draw and sketch, and create books that have meaning to both themselves and others, they increase their sense of self esteem. We are going to take community walks and photograph local streets/stores and parks. The students can incorporate these photos into collages, maps, and personal books about their lives in the community. We will learn directional and travel training information by plotting out street grids. The students also increase literacy levels by writing about the areas in the photographs and labeling the maps. With a cross curriculum approach, the students pinpoint their location in the community and learn to navigate in their area and city.

Many of my students do not have any opportunities to travel outside of their immediate community.

They have not been to all five boroughs of New York. With art supplies and the mapping project, I am hopeful the students will incorporate what they learned in the classroom. They will want to seek out other unknown sections of New York City, utilizing cameras in iPads and cell phones. This allows the students to create a living library to use for their memory books and mapping project.
