My Students
Students grow more when they self-assess. One of the areas I am working on this year is getting students to be able to listen to themselves read and analyze their reading. What can they do to get better?

I work in a lower income school with students who greatly want to learn to read. I teach about 44 students each day, 20 or more students per block.
My Project
Having students listen to themselves read will not only help them to slow down and pay attention to what they are reading, but it will also help them to self-assess and decide what they want to work on to become a better reader.
When students self-assess, they grow more because they are setting their own goals and reaching for them as opposed to being told what they need to work on.
There are many programs that reteach or enrich students through videos or activities and students need the headphones to be able to hear or participate. I also have many ESL students in my classroom and having headphones with microphones will help them become more fluent readers and speakers. Students can also use the talk to type to be able to complete assignments if their typing is slow or if they have a hard time with spelling. This will allow them to complete the assignment to the best of their ability without being held back by their writing or language barriers. The headphones will allow students to listen to themselves play back what has been recorded. They will also allow the students to listen to the activities and programs purchased by the school to reteach and/or enrich the students. Compass Learning is a program used that plays videos and teaches them in areas they need extra support or enrichment. The headphones will also be beneficial to keep students focused. They will be able to listen to only their computer and not be distracted by noise from other computers.
