Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students enter the classroom filled with artwork and books, but with a nonfunctional computer. I very much want a Smart Board and a laptop computer to enhance the learning process for my classes. I have a digital projector that is unable to connect to educational based programs on a computer.

My special education public high school is based in Harlem in a high poverty area.

These students enter the building everyday full of chatter and hope. The parents send their children to us with the expectation that we provide a solid educational base for their future. To achieve this goal I am using a cross curriculum approach in my classroom. I teach a transitional program to prepare students for community integration. I want them to have every advantage possible to prepare them for a world filled with new technology. We go on many community visits to neighborhood art galleries/museums and weekly visits to a department store where we do schoolwide shopping. These are wonderful projects with great goals. However, the missing component is a functional computer that accesses online educational programs with current technology. It is one thing to speak about how great something is, but when you can visual it with movement, color and sound the image stays with you for a lifetime.

My Project

I was fortunate to have my digital projector funded by donorschoose.org. My laptop computer is from 2006 with an old operating system that is unable to be updated. Having a new computer with an enhanced operating system appears to be a simple request but with big results. Remember our school day when we were growing up? There was no technology except for a television that was brought into the classroom for special events. I now realize how much information can be retained when the students are excited about learning and are able to be fully engaged in the process. This is what happens when you project images from computers through the projector onto a screen. The class can hear, see and feel the subject they are learning. I would like to stream videos and movies with an updated computer. We could learn about current events and read online newspapers. The classes could do online math problems as a group and solve problems together. The teaching, tearning and retention factor is huge.

We use store circulars for lessons and my students always show me the computers and say "I wish we could have one of these for the class." Well, I say WISH BIG and, why can't we have an updated computer attached to my digital projector?

It is the season to make wishes come true. A classroom filled with action, light and color equates to a happy class filled with students involved with the learning process. Just think of the difference one computer makes to a classroom and makes a wish come true!
