My Project
Aloha,
My disadvantaged students earn class money each week through their class paycheck.
They earn money through successfully completing their class job, positive behavior, and task completion. Each week they use their earnings to pay their bills. These bills include rent for their desk and tools, utilities (water and electricity), and also maintenance (cleaning and grounds keeping). Their extra money can be saved for extras that they would like to earn, like the items in this project. These resources will help students explore their interests and expand their abilities.
The students at our Title 1 school are very unique. They are caring and accept each other. I think because so many of them come from disadvantaged backgrounds, they have a "we're in this together" mindset and really encourage each other to work towards improvement. Incorporating this classroom economy has taught my students so much more than counting money. They have learning the value of saving for what they really want and even what they need (paying their bills). They encourage each other to get their tasks done so they can earn their pay.
