Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school is a wonderful community of thinkers, communicators, collaborators, and contributors. Each and every member of our faculty works to educate the whole child and improve the school community through various means. One very important example is our 23 raised bed garden beds. Our school garden utilizes all students to help prepare, plant, and maintain. In return, it provides fresh fruits and vegetables for our students and their families throughout the growing season.

Our students originate from at least 15 different countries and speak at least 6 different languages.

Ninety-seven percent of our students receive free or reduced lunch. Our school provides a safe place for students and a wealth of resources for families including clothing, food, and assistance with billing, housing, and medical care. It is an amazing place to grow and learn.

My Project

Our students visit our school garden every other week to work with our volunteer Master Gardener. They have learned about the life cycles of plants and insects that live in the garden. They have learned about the hard work it takes to grow thousands of pounds of produce. They have cleaned out the garden at the end of the season and prepared it for spring planting.

Now, they could use some help learning about what happens under the soil.

My students need a classroom worm farm to grow their own earthworms to contribute to the school garden. I will use 5 different farms so that that each day of classes has their own worm farm to help take care of. The World of Earthworms Kit will be available for all classes to observe the process of the earthworm life cycle. In the process of growing a new generation of earthworms, students will also learn how cafeteria waste can be fed to worms and worms will contribute nutrients to the soil.

During this process, I hope students find an interest in potential careers such as: oligochaeteology, botany, environmental science, and soil science.
