We are a fourth grade team of 57 students in suburban Pittsburgh, PA from a 4-6 building. Being a fourth grader is tough work as it is the first year with many new faces all combining from the district's five primary schools. The students love having their own lockers (with locks!) and a bit more freedom in the bigger school. We love to read and collaborate. We take pride in our learning and work hard to prepare for the future.
My Project
In studying the food chain, we discuss how important worms are to decomposing dead material all over the Earth. Discussing is not the same as doing.
The use of the classroom composter will take our classroom lessons up a notch and students will be able to experience firsthand the wonderful world of worms.
They will be able to witness worms at work and fulfilling their important link in the food chain. After studying the worms in our classroom, they will be transferred to the larger requested courtyard composter which will benefit our entire school in decomposing food waste that would otherwise be thrown away.
Our classroom faces a courtyard which is underutilized. With the addition of the courtyard composter, the courtyard will be a place that our classroom can use as an extended classroom. The compost made will then be used to enrich the flower beds and plants in the courtyard.
