Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a 4th-6th grade science teacher at a school that services over 1,400 students from pre-kindergarten through eighth grade. Our school has a Limited English-Proficient Rate of around 40%, with the majority of the students speaking Spanish. There is bilingual support for our Spanish, Polish, and Arabic speakers. The percentage of students considered to be low-income is 90%.
Last year, I began a program with the students to bring vermicomposting into the classrooms to teach the students that everything we throw away is nothttps://secure.donorschoose.org/admin/proposal_details.html?id=102274
Update Proposal necessarily garbage. The science club was able to create worm bins for 20 classrooms, with the goal of eventually using the compost in our school garden. The students learned that they can recycle food, cardboard, and their old homework in the bins. It was one of the most exciting projects I've ever done. Students were talking about the worms to each other outside of school, and many students were teaching their younger siblings what they had learned. They were even naming the worms. The students find the worms either disgusting or fascinating, but usually both. The excitement about the worms was visible.
Unfortunately due to funds, we were not able to purchase the amount of worms that is necessary to see compost results quickly. Ideally, I would have liked to have about 500 or more worms in each bin, but we started with 50 in each. I was also not able to purchase additional resources to do supporting activities.
To complete my project, I am asking for a video resource for my students to further their understanding of worms and their life cycle. I am asking for resources for myself to create hands-on activities that will integrate math, science, and reading. I am also asking for a worm viewer so that the students can see for themselves what is happening in the bins. Finally, I am asking for additional red worms to supplement the worms already in the bins.
With these additional resources, students will better understand worms and their role in the food web as decomposers. The students will gain an understanding of the waste that humans leave, and the lack of waste in other ecosystems. The students will also be able to experience nature first hand as they create compost for the garden.
By funding this project, you can help the students gain content knowledge and an appreciation for nature and the environment.
