My Students
My students love science, and I want to continue to foster that love!
My students come from a wide range of socio-economic backgrounds in a rural Pennsylvania district.
They are seventh-graders who love to build things and get their hands dirty. Many of my students have some experience with gardening, and this project is an opportunity to enhance their at-home activities with scientific knowledge and environmental sensitivity.
My Project
My students need a classroom worm composting kit to supplement our environmental studies unit. The Environmental Studies unit covers a large portion of the second semester. My students are going to set up a "square-foot" garden here at school. The requested worm composting kit will help my students visualize how they can use food scraps to enrich soil, instead of adding waste to a landfill.
My students love hands-on activities!
Having a living creature in the classroom is reinforcing in many ways, and gives the kids a sense of responsibility and purpose. I'm hoping to instill a love of gardening and the motivation to reduce waste.
More than a third of students from low‑income households
