Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach 3 sections of 9th grade students and one of seniors and juniors along with an advisory class and an art club. 100% of my students are first time college bound and most of them are recent immigrants.
My students are vibrant and resilient.
Many of them face challenges like poverty, gang impacted communities and drug use. Many of these young people have never taken art classes, last year several won awards and we partnered with an art college, a senior center and other organizations.
My Project
Students will create at least one mural, hopefully two. They will learn how to paint in a pointillistic impressionist style and they will create as many shades and tints out of the primary colors (blue, yellow and red) and black and white. They will need to collaborate and plan the mural as well.
One of the spots we want to paint is usually marked by graffiti.
This project will allow our students to serve the community while learning how to paint. It will take the classroom outdoors and hopefully this will make it engaging and fun!
