"I'm an amazing singer" claims a kindergartner as they march into my classroom. What a statement! How many of us as adults would proudly announce that? I have the pleasure to work with around 600 kindergarten through fifth grade students at an elementary school rich in the arts. My students are enthusiastic learners who take pride in their knowledge and musical ability. They are excited to grow their musicianship and explore new concepts every time they step into my classroom.
My Project
In third grade students experience music from around the world; specifically instruments that are native to cultures. Some of the cultures we explore are: Native America, West Africa, China, and India. We are fortunate at our school to have a number of examples of instruments from West Africa for students to see, play and hear but not many from other cultures.
Having a set of tabla drums in our classroom will allow students to experience the sound, size and proper playing technique first hand.
We could include these instruments in an orchestration that accompanies a traditional melody from India. In addition, this instrument could be used in performances by our after school performing arts groups. This spring we are doing a joint performance of an Indian folk tale. We are currently using conga drums as a substitute but the real thing would make our music so much more authentic!
