My Students

"Teaching music to children is the most important thing in life, next to parenting, that a person can do." Jean Ashworth Bartle's quote rings true. One of the best ways to teach music is through world music drumming.

My students are bright, creative, and inquisitive.

Each of the 400 preschool through fifth grade children in my school come to music for thirty minutes, twice a week. We sing, move, play instruments and create. One of their favorite things to do is drumming. Our school is building a culture of drumming. The World Music Drumming curriculum begins in third grade and continues through fifth grade. We even have an after school drumming group for 25 third through fifth graders. We're a Title 1 school but our students work very hard and are committed excellence in academics and in music.

My Project

This drum will play a very important role in our music classroom. Our class sizes are growing and interest in our after school drumming group has become so great that students are turned away because we don't have enough drums. Students learn more quickly and are more engaged when they have their own instrument to play during music. All students that want to improve their drumming skills in our after school group should have the chance to be a part of the group, not be turned away because there isn't an instrument for them to play. Third through fifth grade students will utilize this instrument while learning the World Music Drumming curriculum. Kindergarten through second grade students will use this drum to learn the basics of drumming that will prepare them for World Music Drumming in the upper grades. Our after school drumming group will utilize this drum in each practice. Since this drum is incredibly durable, it will be used by hundreds of students for years to come.

Donations for this drum will improve my classroom immensely.

It will help alleviate the need for sharing because we don't have enough drums for our large class sizes. More students will have the opportunity to participate in our after school drumming ensemble. Drumming will help my students reduce stress and tension, help them connect with others and increase creativity all while learning about the music of Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean. Drumming is for everyone!
