My students absolutely love to sing music from around the world. What better way to put their learning of world music into context then providing easy access to a world map? Help my students expand their learning and world view through a wall mounted map of the world and the United States.
My students are enthusiastic music learners who love to sing and play instruments from around the world.
Everyday as we learn new repertoire and explore listening examples from around the world my students love finding out where the selections come from. It would be so much more meaningful if we had to reference during our discussions.
My Project
I typically give my students background information including historical, cultural and geographical information about the songs we learn and the music we hear. These requested maps would be a constant and easily accessible reference for students as they make connections between our experiences in the music classroom and the world around them.
Currently I find that my students could use a map as a reference several times throughout each lesson.
A perfect example of this need happened during first grade today. When introducing the music of Franz Joseph Haydn I explained that Haydn lived in Austria which is in Europe. About half of my students thought I was talking about Australia. We spent considerable time clearing up the confusion. A map would provide a clear and concise explanation. Not having a map is a hardship.
